My wife and I loved our meal...and we ate plenty. I'm not sure when the new ownership took over, but I think June 2011? Havent "yelped" in forever, but Fin motivated me. And I had no idea they did lunch...I will be back very soon to check that out. Great atmosphere, super personable host, and very educated waiter hit us off the bat. There were some excellent specials, but we eyeballed the menu ahead of time and had already developed cravings so we stayed with items off of their formal menu. You have to get the sweet corn and crab soup. Huge chunks of crab and the corn is pureed I guess...absolutely a perfect soup consistency. It makes you want to pick the bowl up and drink it. We also got the wedge salad. Excellent salad and love that everything is fresh and organic. A toasted piece of focaccia bread with melted blue cheese came on the side and i had never seen that. We also jumped on the crab dip...again we came hungry. Dont judge. Definitely separated itself from any crab dip I've had. Big chunks and not too much butter or cream. At the end of a lot of crab dips, you see the grease, butter, and oil you consumed...not here. Fresh herbs and a perfect texture with tons of crab. As for entrees...I had scallops and the wife had filet. Two excellent choices. Whenever you see premium brandt beef you get your hopes up and this did not disappoint. You could have cut it with your fork. The fresh chives in the mashed potatoes and the unique seasonal vegetables were also great. The scallops were awesome as well. Perfect amount of bacon cooked in for a perfect combo. I usually cook my brussel sprouts with bacon so throwing that in just brought it together even sweeter. Shockingly, we had zero room for desert. Our waiter, recommended a wine we also loved. Saw another review that questioned price and that really surprised me. My wife and I both commented if this restaurant was in Richmond it would've been almost $10 more on average per plate. Thought the prices were a huge plus personally. But another reviewer called all the fresh organics "pretentious" so you just cant please everyone...providing healthier, fresher foods grown under strict regulations to protect the consumer is pretentious? Wow...some people just love to hate. Sorry, but that aggravated me. Also...always a good sign when you see a full bar of locals eating who all seem to know each other. I never went with the previous owner and chef, but everything they have going for them now is top notch. We will be back the next time we are driving through town guaranteed. Did I mention my wife almost got a soup to go after we ate all that so she could have it the day after? I've been to many restaurants on the peninsula and this is my absolute #1. Many thanks.

Visited for my anniversary due to all the great reviews and it lived up to them. The food was phenomenal, atmosphere warm and people extremely nice and inviting. Scott our server and Chef Kenny were great people and extremely hospitable. I look forward to going back again and again!

Enjoyed a business lunch here. Had their grilled salmon lunch, which was a great deal for 9.95. Service was a little slow. Otherwsie, a nice atmosphere.

Great experience. This restaurant has everything you would expect from a nice seafood restaurant. From the appetizers, entrees to the deserts everything was delicious. The staff was very attentive and pleasant. I would highly recommend if you are in the area to stop by Fin Seafood for a great experience and a great meal.

I returned Dec 26 w/my relatives from Delaware. They drove down just to have dinner with me. (Yes, i have a great family). My older cousin and his wife have traveled all over the world. So, they love trying new things and appreciate good food. They loved the ambiance and walked around the community. They were excited with the menu and ordered a lobster dish and various appetizers. My younger cousins were a bit more apprehensive when ordering. However, they truly enjoyed everything. My mom and I ordered the seafood pasta and also the fried oysters-which were a beautiful golden color. The pasta was good but was missing something for me. We had a german reslinging wine. Dont recall the name but it wasnt too dry or sweet. One of the big plus for me is the service. The waiters are always gracious. Also, are the mgrs and owner. They came out and greeted us. My cousins were very impressed!! Well, I returned again on Dec 30. My younger cousin and her husband just returned from Europe and are now back in the states. She wanted to plan a bd dinner for her mom, so I suggested THE FIN. The party consisted of 11 from various ages(new born, toddler-78yrs). I didnt realize that the chef is open to preparing special dishes to order. A few of the guest were allergic to predominately most seafood. So, they had burgers and fries. Everyone enjoyed their dishes. I enjoyed my salmon but was not pleased with my calamari. It was the worst calmari I have ever had. It was too thick and very bitter. Not sure why. I must say, it was a beautiful golden color but the taste was horrible. Calamari is one of my fav dishes. I guess I got spoiled from a fd's dad that owned a greek restaurant. His calamari makes you feel as if you are in Greece. Anyway, dont order calmari at THe FIn.(Order the fried oyster instead) You will enjoy! .... I wish I could recall my waitress name. She was such a pleasant gracious waitress. She had a lot of patience and got ALL our orders right. She also suggested a great reseling for me. She seemed geniuely supportive of ensuring the bd girl had a great time. She brought out the special made bd cake-a bottle of wine with grapes. It was beautiful! The cake was so moist and a hit with the bd girl and guest. Well, Ive been to the Fin a total of 4 times. And, each time has been a great time.So like the terminator--"I 'll be BACK!"

We went to fin on a weekday for lunch. We got the lunch special which included the she crab soup, an entree of the couscous Salmon, and the tiramisu dessert. I would say the best part of our meal was the wine, which was a sparkling Moscato from Argentina. I really feel like the entire meal, while presented beautifully just did not taste very good. The green couscous had absolutely no flavor. None. The Salmon while perfectly cooked also lacked any seasoning whatsoever. The tiramisu that I was eagerly looking forward to was a mildly flavored cream cheese concoction with flavorless cake. The waitress who was wonderful, said they had been getting complaints about the dessert all day. I told her it should have more coffee flavor. But honestly, I'm no chef. Tiramisu is not a toughy. We won't go again. I don't mind paying for good food.... but it shoud taste good, as well as look good.

I had a business lunch this afternoon at Fin and loved it. I enjoyed the salmon with the basil pesto and orzo- so yummy. The salmon was cooked perfectly and the fresh bread worth every carb. The service was also great, just the right amount of attention without being hovering. Really recommend everyone try out Fin a great place.

My husband and I decided to try Fin for our anniversary. I had read mixed reviews and was a bit nervous as to what we were getting ourselves into. I was quite pleased with our experience, however. I made reservations since it was a Friday night. It wasn't too busy when I got there but by the time we left, it was starting to fill up. Our waitress, Jennifer, was so sweet and nice. She made great recommendations and was always nearby if we needed anything. My husband and I weren't too terribly hungry so we decided to split the Firecracker Shrimp appetizer and the Fin Mixed Grill entree. The restaurant was more than happy to accommodate our request and even split the meal onto two plates for us so we didn't have to do it ourselves. The shrimp appetizer was amazing! The shrimp was spicier than what I usually like but was still delicious. The entree itself came with Crab Cake, grilled Tuna Mignon and grilled Shrimp & Scallop Kabob. All was amazing! Yes, it is a little pricey, but in my opinion it's worth it.

You would expect the seafood to be amazing here, but it wasn't. Their firehouse/firecraker shrimp was covered in a mayo sauce which was overwhelming. We sent it back and asked for no sauce but then understood why they put the sauce on..to cover up the taste. I ordered their grouper and it came out chewy and overcooked. I tried the seafood pasta instead which wasn't bad but still not great. My coworker had the crab cakes and tuna and he said it wasn't that good either. I had one glass of wine and he had 2 beers with dinner and our bill was about $115 and definitely not worth it. Would definitely not recommend this restaraunt.

Fin is the latest high end addition to the Schlesinger's, Opus9 collection of restaurants in the Williamsburg/Newport News area. This restaurant serves a wonderful selection of seafood, lobster as well as steaks. The dinner we experienced was the best I have had anywhere. The entire meal starting with a HUGE jumbo shrimp cocktail, roasted Caesar Salad, poached grouper and lobster in a lobster broth and finishing with a fig ice cream was a memorable experience. The atmosphere is wonderful, the service was impeccable. The restaurant also offers an attractive bar/lounge if you just want to go in for a drink and some raw bar. This restaurant is a winner and I will definitely return often. Prices are moderate to expensive but worth the dining experience.

We've always enjoyed our meals here and never had the negative experiences related by other reviewers. It is reliably good, the fish is well prepared with interesting sauces and sides, and the wine list has some good choices by the glass. Service is friendly and prompt without being pushy. Decor and ambiance are more elegant than your typical storefront or chain place. This makes it a nice place to take your honey on a date and tipped the balance for me towards 4 stars. As other reviewers have said, it is a bit pricey, wine especially; some lower-priced but interesting specials would go a long way to helping there.

I desperately wanted to splurge and get lobster and steak from Fin, and then I remembered I'm poor as hell. So instead I got scallops, which is my seafood favorite. Here they were tasty but nothing extraordinary. The fried calamari was generic. My boyfriend raved at the rare tuna steak, and he can't wait until one of our parents come back to town to take us out to Fin and foot the bill. We certainly won't be heading back on our own dime. In my opinion, it just isn't good enough to budget it in to once a year, but if someone fancy comes to town, I'll keep Fin on the backburner as a potential second try.

My husband and I went to Fin for my birthday dinner and we really enjoyed it. Really nice atmosphere and the service was outstanding. The appetizers were great and the she crab soup was delicious. I had the paella, which was good but not great, a little on the bland side. My husband had the "Hang Ten" chicken breast and loved it. They gave us a free desert for my birthday and we had the creme brulee sampler which was amazingly delicious!

Overall, good meal and excellent service. Solid 3.5 tending towards 4. The oyster stew was the best of the dishes. Expertly presented. The taste and combination were truly superb. Very delicate, yet full of flavor. On the off side was the iceberg wedge. The iceberg wedge is a classic dish that you really can't get wrong and is a miss at Fin. The dressing was weak and wasn't any better than bottled. No bits of blue cheese and very bland. Also, the bacon bits tasted like they were out of a jar. On top of that, the wedge has some brown parts on the core that with proper attention in the kitchen would have been removed. The iceberg wedge, a very simply dish, was a bad window into the restaurant. Again, a simply dish should not be presented so poorly with sub-par ingredients. The she-crab soup was just fine with lots of crab. The beef carpaccio was fine as well. The $32 bottle of brut French Champagne was very nice. I'd go back with a watch full eye. The oyster stew is so over the top I'd definitely order the dish again. The other menu items are very appealing. So, most likely we'll swing by again. If only for the oyster stew and champagne.

Fin styles themselves as a hip, trendy martini place that serves upscale seafood. However, I'm not a fan of the place. The seafood is not that amazing. The scallops I had were overcooked as were the shrimp my date had. This is a pretty basic thing to get down for a seafood restaurant, so this was certainly disappointing. Also, it is WAY overpriced, particularly the drinks. I think they would be better off reevaluating their price points and offering more specials. There is a small outside patio that is kinda nice, but again, you probably don't want to stay there long paying $9 to $12 for a martini or a mix drink. Skip it and check out Brickhouse or Kelly's instead. Much cooler crowd and much more reasonably priced. Oh, and the manager was kind of rude to me when I was inquiring some about the business. Apparently the owner also owns Schlesinger's, which explains why it's essentially the same overpriced crappy place just with steak instead of seafood.

Went there for my birthday dinner tonight. The three of us had the 7 course tasting menu and it was amazing! Two of us had the wine pairing with it and loved it. The $30 wine pairing was almost an all you could drink of their best wines. Perfect pairings, excellent food with a great progression, attentive staff and a good atmosphere. Tried a lot of food that I would have never eaten by iteself, which was such a fun experience. After we had finished eating, Chef Daniel's enthusiasm for cooking this meal was very obvious, and was only matched by our enthusiam in eating it. The Flintstone lobster, white chocolate, taragon push pop was the perfect finish. Thanks Fin, we will see you again soon!

Yeah, there are better places to spend this kind of money. Not horrible tasting food, but I'd rather spend my restaurant budget on AWESOME food, not just, "not horrible".

We chose Fin for dinner after seeing that they were a sister restaurant of Schlesinger's (which we have always enjoyed although we haven't visited recently) and thinking the menu looked pretty good. Overall, our food was pretty good. My husband's she crab soup, with giant lumps of crab, was great, and the brie appetizer was also decent although a little heavy on the honey. I really enjoyed my crab cakes- very little filler, just great tasting crab. And the signature green apple tartar sauce was excellent. Really, everything was good until our waitress disappeared and we ended up unattended for quite a long time. The manager checked on us a few times, and it was nice that she was so visible, but our dinner took way longer than it should have. Also, the atmosphere overall was nice, but it did seem odd to have such an open kitchen in such a small dining room. I felt like I was looking into the kitchen all night. So, we were happy with the food, but not as impressed with the overall Fin experience.

I LOVE this place. I go here all the time. Every Monday they have a drink special called Mixology Monday, where they have two themed drinks made specially by the house mixologist. The food is always wonderful and I love the atmosphere. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu, though the scallops or the salmon are my favorite. Truly wonderful

We were looking for an amazing seafood adventure and FIn was incredible! We had the 3 course lunch with crisp wedge salads but the main course of salmon was the star of the show. I savored the flaky, tasty, salmon in a rich sauce over a bed of fresh veggies....It eas so good, didn't miss a single bite! Dessert was a key lime bar that was a perfect compliment to the wonderful dinner. Our other entree was the lobster roll, not as good as the salmon and lost some of "lobster" taste in the overpowering mayo mixture. However the flourless chocolate cake was an excellent choice.

Outstanding! We came to celebrate an important milestone, and the staff at Fin made it very special with a champagne toast when we were seated. It was such a nice touch! The food was exceptional. We splurged on the tasting menu with wine pairing, and have no regrets. Everything was delicious, and the seafood cooked perfectly. The wine pairings were superb - we even emailed them the next day to get the names of a couple that we really enjoyed. Service is outstanding as well, from the hostess to the server. We can't recommend Fin enough. If you're celebrating something special, or just want a memorable meal, this is the place. Great place for a romantic date!

This place was a little sexy, and I liked that. I also liked how open the kitchen was. Lots of "order ups" for the same dishes. Popular Restaurant Week demands. Anyway, the crap dip was great... Crab Cake was great. Crab soup was great. The cheesecake was just okay, but who comes to a fine dining seafood restaurant for dessert anyway? The scallops and risotto with brussel sprouts were nothing short of amazing, as was our dining experience. So I say, Fin for the win.

The fish was fresh and very well cooked. I ate here by myself and was sat near the kitchen. I really did not like how I could hear the kitchen staffs inappropriate conversations. So the food and service where good but beware of sitting by the kitchen.

Hands down the BEST food I have ever eaten in my ENTIRE life! No really....it was like an emotional food experience. We celebrated our 11 year anniversary and my husband surprised me with Fin. As I walked in, I love how quaint but elegant it is. The decor is rich, warm, and welcoming. The kitchen has a open viewing area as the chefs prepare the food. We were seated at a booth near the windows. Our reservations were at 5:00 and there were maybe 2 other tables seated at the time. I noticed they have a bar area on the other side of the restaurant which is closed off by glass so any noise stays over there. Nice! Our server Tommy was super cool and friendly. He was very informative on the menu items and answered any questions we had. After looking over the menu we ordered a drink, dirty martini and a drink that Tommy recommended with rhubarb and gin in it. All I can say is WOW!! Both were top notch! We decided to go with the 5 course dinner with wine pairings. I was informed that Chef Kenny Sloane is a Master Gardener and grows his produce, catches the fish, and also gets any meat from local, sustainable farms. This is where it hits home for me. I grow vegetables in our garden at home and also support sustainable farming. We fish for our own and also dive/spearfish for seafood. So this meant a LOT to me to know I was eating clean food. We were surprised with a little complimentary taste from the chef that had fish and caviar on it. AMAZING! The course started and everything was brought out in a timely manner but not rushed. We were able to enjoy our food and wine between each dish. I can not express how good this food was!!! The salmon is my favorite being that it is sous vide. The heirloom tomatoes in the caprese salad was the BEST tomato I have ever eaten. We got a taste of a truffle on top of our salmon that sale for $1900 a pound! Superb!! The scallops were so clean, tasty and perfectly cooked. The pork belly and fried oyster were heavenly and comforting. Everything worked perfectly together that was paired with each dish. We kept saying to one another "Oh my God".....we probably said it 20 times while eating. This is the kind of food that makes you realize how terrible of a cook I am! Haha! The food is so good it will inspire you to want better food or even go to culinary school. They even surprised us with some champagne for our anniversary at the end of our dinner. If I could have met the chef, I would have kissed his cheek and thanked him for this life and food changing experience! You will NOT be disappointed. You must try this food!

Came down to Tidewater area on business and met a group of 6 colleagues for dinner. Reservations were made and we met at the restaurant. Very accommodating staff as our party grew larger than originally expected. Service was timely but not overly intrusive. I had the corn chowder with crab followed by crab cakes. Meal was wonderful. The chowder had a strong sweet corn taste, but after a few spoonfuls I found myself settling in nicely to a unique take on what might typically be a boring start to dinner. Crab cake was great, heavy with lump crab meat and nicely seasoned. The corn, tomato and chickpeas underneath were colorful but a little heavy on the chickpea for my taste. No matter, the overall meal was consumed with a glass of one of their house cabs from which the attentive waiter let me sample two prior to selection. Fin left a very positive impression on me and my workmates, and the atmosphere allowed for pleasant conversation without being to loud or too quite.

I went to Fin Seafood for lunch with my friend. The place was clean and cozy. The table setting was nice too. I ordered she crab soup, salmon and desert. The food was good but everything was just so so salty!!!! She crab soup...I really want to add more hot water because it's just so salty!! The salmon was good...moisture inside and crispy outside but mashed potatoes underneath was again so salty! I end up drinking so much water with our meal. The desert was OK, it was right amount for me. If they can reduce of salt that they put it on to the food, I will go back there and try other menu.

Enjoyed lunch here during restaurant week with my husband. We both had the she crab soup which was delicious! Creamy and spicy. We shared an order of the calamari fries which were cooked perfectly! The calamari melts in your mouth. My husband had the surf and turf pie he loved it. It was savory and rich. I had the tempura catfish, it was very good but after tasting my husband dish I wished I hard ordered the shepards pie. We finished off the meal with sweet potato pie, so yummy! The service was excellent. Prompt, efficient, and knowledgable. I will definitely be coming back.

Arrive to restaurant on time for reservation and was immediately seated. The waitress was knowledgeable of the menu. Our first problem was we where with a party of 8 for a birthday. Had a teenager who didn't want anything off the dinner menu and chef refused to make a hamburger from the lunch menu! Wow.... Ok. Food for was well prepare but only medium seasoning. Will add that the crab cakes were great! The service was good but doesnt align with the upscale prices.

It was my roommate's 30th birthday- so we decided to take our group of 20 and dine here. Most of us were extremely happy with our experience tonight! Fin has a very upscale yet laid back ambiance. Theres a bar - if u choose to sit there instead.Service was impeccable- our servers were very knowledgable about each menu item, wine pairings and answered any and all of our questions varying from "what are your favorites" to "whats a sunchoke"? I got the sweet corn with lump crab and the stuffed smoked salmon with a glass of pinot blanc ( per my servers recommendation). The soup was very sophisticated with hints of garlic, semi sweet taste and overpowered with corn. There was a decent crab to soup ratio. Sweet soup isnt my cup of tea-- but i enjoyed the unique taste. My smoked salmon was stuffed with orzo and and had a salsa verde sherbet topping. The dish was cold ( for some reason, i thought it would be hot). Anyhow, the orzo was cooked and seasoned well and did not overpower the smoked salmon. The garnishing on the side were speckles of lime sour cream and bits of cucumber- all provided a great balance with the less seasoned meat & orzo. The pastry chef made us a special cheesecake with oreo crust. I really enjoyed the cheesecake- it was extremely light! ( listen up cheesecake factory: just cause its cheesecake , doesnt mean it has to taste like a sugar pyramid). Anyhow, that was yummy !! Other people's dishes looked awesome and everyone was raving about their main courses. Our servers were amazing- they were knowledgable , always refilling our waters and kept checking up on us- they handled our table of 20 with grace. My glass of wine was well paired-- however came with a 15$ price tag that caught me WAY off guard. A place id return to- if someone else was paying :)

Had the best meal at Fin last night. I've lived in Newport News a long time but had never tried it before, even though I'd heard favorable things about it. Went with boyfriend for an early dinner around 6pm. The inside was closed for a private party but they were seating guests on the patio, which was fine with us. Perfect evening to sit outside! Except for the flies which were harassing us quite a bit at first. Our waitress was friendly and extremely knowledgeable about the menu and wine. I noticed a team effort in the waitstaff, they all help clear each other's tables, pick up checks, etc. I had the scallops, which were amazing, and my guy had the salmon, also fantastic and presented with flair. We had a great bottle of Pinot noir with dinner and a strawberry butter cake to finish. Excellent all around!

We were at Fin for my vegan daughter's 30th birthday in September, 2014. It is difficult to find any vegan-friendly restaurants in Hampton Roads that we haven't visited in her 15+ years as a vegan, so I was very surprised to see a seafood restaurant pop onto my Internet radar. I did my due diligence and called the restaurant to explain both the dietary needs and importance of this landmark birthday. I spoke several times to staff and even had a return phone call from the chef, Kenny. He explained his plan for the dinner and described his garden and I, at least, was hooked (!). The dinner that he created especially for us was incredibly intuitive and very, very special. The vegetables were beautifully prepared and combined with loving and expert skill. It is difficult to find a chef who thinks of vegetables as anything other than a perfunctory side dish, but Kenny clearly understands how varietal and rich they can be as the main dish. My daughter was bowled over and we still haven't stopped talking about it. We've dined at Vedge in Philadelphia, Blossom in NYC, and Plant in Asheville, and I can assure the reader that this dinner rivaled anything we've had in those top-drawer vegan restaurants. It takes a lot to make us Norfolkians cross the bridge, but we will go back to this excellent restaurant.

I have been a client at this restaurant for many years and have always been pleased with the service here, so I decided to have a get together with family and friends to bring in the new year. We ordered a very nice bottle of champagne, and we specified that we wanted it brought chilled (which is the only way it should be drunk). The waiter came and filled it to the brim....and it was warm. It was extremely disappointing especially on New Years. We felt rushed out of the restaurant and it is extremely disappointing after all these years.

I dined here in October. I was on a business trip to Newport News and my company was picking up the bill, so what did I do? I researched and found one of the best restaurants in the area, and since my company was paying, why not go with the 7 course tasting menu! I have to say that this meal was extremely solid. Very good flavors and technique. Everything was cooked perfectly and for the most part was very delicious. I had a few minor problems that prevented me from giving this meal a full 5 star rating. The crab cake course was just ok. The crab cake was decent, but I didn't see how it fit into the menu. It wasn't as interesting as everything else. My other complaint would be that the scallops were over salted. My coworker dining with me, commented that it was so oversalted, it felt like his tongue was burning. I had to agree. The scallop was cooked perfectly though, and the rest of the dish was amazing. Everything else was great. Our server was really good (I forgot his name, but props to him). Loved the open kitchen vibe. It reminds me a lot of the days when I worked in the kitchen, and it lets you see and appreciate what the cooks on the line are creating for you. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and the 7 course menu. Excellent. Highlights: Sriracha ice cream Shaved truffles on the bison $$$!!! Passion fruit cheesecake dessert was pretty damn good (This coming from a former pastry chef/line cook.) Everything was cooked on point. I was extremely impressed by this. Chef Sloane has a REALLY strong brigade.

One of my favorite spots in Newport News. This place is so very yummy. Whether it be a cute date or for my bday I want Fin. This place is casual fine dining if that makes sense. I've came in with jeans and a nice top but also dressy before as well. There is a artsy nautical theme, I wish though they would change the white tablecloth to something darker, it would make the place pop with the colors already inside. But meh. There is indoor as well as a small outdoor terrance seating available for the warmer weather. Lunch is great, they have deals for 3 course menus at reasonable prices for the quality of food. Like 20 or 30 bucks, but trust me. Its worth it. The ambiance is cutesy trendy not overly stuffy like most "fine" places. The staff has always been helpful...maybe a bit too much for my taste but considering the area I guess thats what they aim for. The food is fresh and seasonal so the menu changes. The most recent outing I had the 30 buck 3 course with crab-corn chowder, seared scallop risotto, and a passionfruit cheesecake. My sis had a salad, shepard's pie and key lime bars. My favorite is definitely the key lime pie which is rare as I hardly EVER order dessert but the portions allow for it. Yum. The crab corn chowder has a sweet tang and there was actually crab meat inside. The risotto was perfection and the scallops atop were succulent, beautifully seared. My cheesecake I found a bit too rich but the passionfruit was a good accent with the creaminess of the cheese. The most disappointing dish I found however was the salad, and that's because they used iceberg...at least thats what it looked and tasted like. I would expect that romaine or a better green leaf lettuce would be used at such a restaurant. For drinks we ordered just sweet tea. Typically southern and sweet to the tee, Overall, I love and miss Fin. I will definitely be back.

Fin is a great local place for fantastic seafood and great service. Our server Matt was able to recommend items on the menu that fit the bill for my husband and me. We started with the Deep Fried scallops and pork belly, I had the bison NY strip, my husband had the paella. All three savory dishes were well-seasoned and fresh. For dessert we shared the pina colada panna cotta that was a light and airy finish to our meal. I would recommend this to anyone for special occasions or daily dining.

Simply divine! Seasonal menu with local organic and sustainable food. It's pricey but well worth every penny for the quality of food you receive and the service of the staff. I can't wait for the next night out with my wife.

Fantastic experience. I took my date here for valentines day and I was blown away. I ordered the crab dip as a starter and the crab cake entree, my date had the scallops, the food was excellent. Service was very consistent with frequent check ins and suggestions. Also the restaurant had a great atmosphere and was fit for all parties. A more open area for family or work related gatherings, a bar area with large TVs for a more casual setting, and also a back room area for intimate dinning. Highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

This place has become exponentially better since the new owner took over. We just tried the brunch for Easter. It was all amazing, as usual. One thing made the place five-star for sure: My friends is a vegetarian and cannot eat red meat for health reasons. She accidentally ordered something with spicy sausage as a side ingredient. The staff immediately took her food when we brought it up and brought her a new dish w/o red meat. No issues, no questions even though it was her mistake. They only charged her for one meal and were completely cool about the whole thing. That's complete class and I'm glad it went down like that since that's my favorite place and it was her first time. Great impression. Always returning...

I dined here for a business dinner and really enjoyed the experience. The restaurant is in the same vicinity as Schlesingers in Port Warwick, and is to seafood what the steakhouse is to steak: a upscale seafood dining experience. I was especially blown away by the she crab soup. It had an awesome kick to it & everyone at my table who ordered it devoured the soup. I also had a salmon salad that was wonderful. I was definitely impressed with the meal & plan to return!

Holy crap. To die for if you are foodie. Service and food was amazing and well, it makes you wanna dance naked in front of strangers. Lucky for everyone I did refrain, but wow. From the she crab soup to perfectly seared scallops with risotto and a key lime dessert with meringue. Sweet Jesus take me now I'm in flipping heaven.

We rarely get to Newport News around dinner time anymore but a day trip to Richmond gave us a great opportunity to give Fin Seafood a try on the way home. Upon entering, we were greeted by the hostess and then seated all the way in the back, past the bar and next to a very loud, conversant party of ten. I didn't mind them being loud since they were celebrating a birthday party but I would have liked to have been sat somewhere else in the restaurant where my wife and I could actually have a conversation of our own. Anyway, the appetizer section of the Fin menu is by far the most promising, at least on the night we were there. Some of the entrees sounded worthwhile but neither of us felt up to the emotional investment required (duck with chocolate sauce anyone?). We each started with a bowl of soup. Sweet corn and lump crab for me and She Crab for my wife. Both were rich and delicious and the best things we tried all night. If I had to crown a winner it would be the She Crab but by no more than a peeky toe. My wife then tried the grilled Caesar's Salad but confessed to being disappointed. The dressing just seemed to lack a certain amount of acidic tang tickling the bottom of her inner cheeks. I tried it and had to agree. Just...something...missing. I decided to try two appetizers in lieu of an entree. A really good choice was the grilled octopus, which I am a huge fan of whenever I see it on a menu. This came out grilled perfectly to retain tenderness which is key. Just 5-10 seconds too long on the heat and the meat turns to rubber. Not the case here thank goodness. My second app choice was the braised pork belly and fried oysters, which are a match made in culinary heaven. The key is to not do too much to either ingredient and just let them do their thing on the plate. My only complaint on the dish was the garnish of pimento cheese grits. They were just bland and insipid and seemed to be begging the question "Why am I here? Why am I here?" I wish I knew.

I realize Newport News might not be your first choice for an upscale dinner date, but it should be (based solely on Fin). I have to tell you guys, I was not unimpressed by one single element of this meal, from the totally chill environment upon entering and dining to the unpretentiousness of the food and service. Everything was extraordinary. I'd like to note that all or most menu items are seasonal, organic, and locally sourced. The she crab soup was perfectly balanced...complex, sweet, and fresh. We also ordered a tuna tartare app with their amazing sriracha ice cream. holy sh*t, wow!! I'm rarely blown away like this even though I must admit, Fin holds the most special place in my heart. I dined here with my husband 5 years ago for my birthday just after finding out we were pregnant with our son. I have to say, after traveling all about and really diving into being a foodie, Fin maintained its 5 star status. I am overjoyed to walk away from the experience with the same stars in my eyes. As most things, years later, are never the same...leaving you with that you can't go home again let down feeling. Not at Fin, not at all. The chef and his whole team really have a great formula which should be locally emulated. btw, I ordered the duck which was succulent and sublime, my husband ordered the most beautiful filet with truffle butter. We also had a bottle of the Grayson Cellars Chardonnay upon the recommendation of our server. It was pretty good too. Give Fin a go, it's a real treat.

The food was excellent. I had the fois gras and the sorrel salad. My friends had the crab cakes and the she-crab soup. The wine was really good (and I'm from California) I took a star away because of the service When we walked in we initially accepted an empty booth, but before we were seated, still standing at the hostess stand, we changed our mind and decided on a table instead. The hostess seemed put-out by the change of plan even though there were a number of tables available on a Tuesday night. It started the experience out on a bit of a sour note . The server was very knowledgeable and pleasant, but we sat with empty water glasses and coffee cups for too long for a 5th star.

This continues to be my favorite seafood restaurant in the area. We stopped in Saturday night to beat the snowed in blues with a dinner out. The restaurant was empty probably due to the streets we still not completely cleared, but our server seemed in good spirits. Started off splitting the charcuterie plate which was very interesting. Not something I would usually order, but we really enjoyed the flavors. For our mains we had the smokey salmon and scallop dishes. My scallops were by far the best I've ever eaten. My wife's salmon was equally tasty and I thought their presentation with the glass dome full of smoke was pretty cool. The rating would have been 5 stars, but our dessert that we took home was kind of disappointing after the top notch entrees. The deconstructed cheesecake was OK, but the chef would be better served to just make the passion fruit cheesecake with a traditional crust, the dessert needed a bit more crunch and sweetness of the chocolate graham crackers to offset the acidity of the curd. Fin still blows away any other seafood restaurant in the area. Take that all you overrated Virginia Beach oceanfront joints!!!

I would drive from Cville just to eat here again. Incredible she crab soup and melt in your mouth foie gras! Omg!!!! And the warm bread. Sigh. I can't wait to go back to that area for work just so I can eat here!

I've been here a couple times and have to say it's one of the best upscale restaurants in the area! Moving here from Orange County California, I was shocked at the lack of quality restaurants in this area. The food is outstanding and the service is amazing. The servers take their time, help you decide, and recommend wines to pair with your entree. My husband and I have been recommended to a few other "nicer" restaurants in the area. And they were not good. Fin is amazing quality and you won't regret going.

The food was great, the ambiance was lovely (opt for sitting out on the patio on a nice spring day), service was great, but the best part was the cocktails. A little high on the pricing, but you get what you pay for.

Okay, so I am by no means a fine dining regular so I am speaking of my experience as a regular Joe with a mediocre pallet at best. LOVED! fin. My finance and I were out for the night in celebration of our 5 year dating anniversary (on a Saturday around 6). We are in Norfolk but were heading to the Newport News area to see Memphis the Musical and wanted to treat ourselves. I chose Fin because of the wonderful reviews it received. Ambiance ideal for our occasion. I'm sure someone else described it in detail in another review so I won't do it here. Noise level good. We lucked out because as soon as we were all done eating, a larger group of 20 something year old guys and gals were entering our section and were a little loud upon entry. Of course, we were pressed for time to eat in order to make the show on time, and by gosh our waiter, Robert, was super understanding and a joy to work with. Luckily we showed up to the restaurant with an idea of what we wanted for starter, soup and entree because of previous reviews. Robert gave us a rundown of the specials for that night, which all sounded divine!, but we stuck with our original list from the dinner menu online. Pork belly & Fried oysters. Must have. Everything on the plate was just a flavor explosion of greatness. I think this dish won best of the night for me. (Turns out I'm not much of a fan of oysters...I think that's just me though. It probably had nothing to do with what was done in the kitchen.) I had the Sweet Corn Soup, he had the She Crab Soup. We preferred the Sweet Corn Soup which was warmer in temperature than the She Crab Soup. Both excellent. Local Flounder and Jumbo Lump Crab for him: I didn't try his plate but he said he enjoyed it. Seared Scallops for me: Loved! Really the most perfect Scallops I have had. I have been ordering scallops a lot lately to see if I can understand the perfection of scallops I hear discussed on shows like Masterchef and Hell's Kitchen haha and these are by far the best I have had. I'm not sure how they got them so perfectly seared and soft, not rubbery or stringy or bitter. Risotto: mmmm great!!!! When I do go out for fine dining, I like to pair my meal with wine. I have absolutely no knowledge of wine because I drink it about 2x per year. Robert did an amazing job at selecting one for me and even did a little show of sorts to help me learn how to bring out the flavors. I really liked Robert. He even made efforts to inform the kitchen that we were cramped for time. The turnover for our dishes was perfect. Thanks Robert! We passed on dessert because of time. Thanks fin. I'll likely be back.

*sigh* I really don't want to do this, but I feel as though I owe it to people to understand what they're in for when they go, especially for special occasions. I want to preface this by saying that I sucked it up when the lady who called to confirm my reservation on yesterday told me that I couldn't have the table that I specifically requested after New Year's. REALLY?! So, folk who also plan ahead, requested this table in December maybe?! Yeah...okay. She basically chose to be really nasty regarding making accommodations for us, telling me that she had made her seating plan and that was it. When we arrived, the hostess, who was just lovely, sat us in the back of the restaurant near the bathrooms. I was DONE. Not withstanding, through five courses of a pre-fix menu that was totally without flavor (fire your chef...TODAY), we didn't have an issue with the $250.00 charge for dinner....had we not left there starving half to death. My time with FIN is indeed..."FIN." Do with that advice what you will or may, but it is no longer the place for me. I'll take up the reservation issue with Opentable.com , but they really need to go from the front of the house to the kitchen and issue pink slips.

I enjoyed everything about this place. I searched it on yelp and was able to place the reservation right from here, so when we arrived a few minutes early we had a table waiting for us. We were in town for a concert so I expected it to be a little busy and maybe take a while but as the restaurant filled the service did not decline. The atmosphere, decor, menu, food, and service was impeccable. The server was a middle-aged man that was laid-back but extremely helpful and knowledgable. My husband got the 5-course meal, which came out course by course perfectly with my food. I only wish we had eaten less of the bread that came out first because the dinners were so amazing we left stuffed. The bathroom was extremely clean. I would suggest this place to anyone that wants to have a great food experience. We will definitely be returning, although we're hour away!

Exceptional as always! My family and I went to Fin this evening for "Tapas Tuesdays" and it was sublime. Chef Kenney as well as his kitchen and front of house staff always rise to and surpass our expectations. Not to mention what a deal it was. 3 courses with wine pairing only $25.00 plus tip, (bar only) and very well worth the cost. I simply cannot oversell Fin. If standards remain as they are and the menu continues to impress the way it has I am sure I will be patronizing the establishment for years to come. Best kept secret in Newport News.

I rarely write online user reviews, but in this case I simply had to. We live in Newport News and there are few fine dining options available in town. We love to eat out, and enjoy supporting the local restaurant community. That said, a restaurant is not just about food - it's about how a business treats its customers as well. We stopped in to Fin for a special occasion - celebrating our first baby. A couple Christmases ago, we had purchased a $50 gift certificate for my parents to enjoy a nice meal with us the next time they were able to come to town. We figured this was a perfect time to celebrate. We had a nice lunch - the food was very good (apparently they are under new ownership) and our service was fine (we were the only table in the restaurant on a Saturday afternoon). Our problem came when we went to pay the bill. We were told that the "gift card" we'd purchased had a $2 per month fee attached to it, whereby for every month we didn't use it, we'd been charged $2. As a result, our entire $50 gift card was null and void. My mother was nice about it and paid for our meal in full. However, this policy was never explained when we purchased the gift card - and not honoring the gift card sits very poorly with me as a local restaurant patron. In essence, we would have had to use the gift card immediately after purchasing it to get our $50 worth! The management made no effort to offer compensation other than "sorry, that's just the way it is." This is not a business policy that will endear customers to the restaurant, and certainly is not standard for other fine dining places in Newport News. For example, we recently found two $25 gift cards purchased to Circa 1918 in the same time frame (two years ago or so). Last week, we went there and they accepted them with no problems whatsoever (and had just as amazing a meal, if not better). In the future, I would caution other patrons looking to support local restaurants to avoid Fin until they learn how to better serve their customers. We certainly will not be returning any time soon.

I very rarely give an establishment 5 stars, but I was so impressed with Fin recently, that I just have to. My husband and I chose to go to Fin as a spur of the moment treat, since we're new to the area and were looking for something new. I am so glad we chose to go to Fin, because not only did it hit the spot for what we were craving, but it far surpassed our expectations. First of all, the decor is beautiful (I can see how it might not appeal to everyone, but aqua is my favorite color, so I love it). The water theme isn't over the top or hokey, it's just enough to give the impression of a an underwater experience without making you feel like you're at Chili's or TGI Friday's. They keep the decor simple. We started with the oysters with meyer lemon mignonette. The oysters were fresh, and the mignonette was the perfect accompaniment. My husband order the crab cake as an appetizer, and he was thoroughly impressed. For dinner, I had the beef filet (medium rare) with sour cream and chive whipped potatoes, organice vegetables (green beans), and a red wine demiglace. The filet was cooked perfectly (my mouth is watering just thinking about it) and the red wine demiglace sauce was perfect to dip my filet and potatoes in. Little did I know, they threw in two sea scallops for free (at least, I think they were, I didn't check the bill lol), and they were cooked perfectly. My husband had the short ribs and lobster with sour cream & chive whipped potatoes, lobster risotto, sauteed spinach, parsnip puree, sweet potatoes and brussels sprouts. This is the perfect meal for him - so many things he loves! His short ribs were fork-tender, he didn't even need a knife! And the flavors combined so well together, I don't think they should change a thing about this meal. We will most definitely be coming back to Fin. I have a feeling it's going to be "our" place from now on!

Fin is the whole package when it comes to fine dining! I've been here a few times in the past year and had another wonderful meal last night at Fin, proving this place never lets you down! Atmosphere - Last night I ate at the bar, which was nice because with the heat I wasn't feeling like getting dressed up for the dining room. The bar has a more casual feel than the dining room, and also has a tv for sports lovers. Also, the lighting is great at the bar. Not too dark or too bright. Drinks - The bartender last night was great (but they usually are at Fin). He made some suggestions on wines and updated us on what new wines had been added to the menu. He also gave us tastes of wines we thought we might like, which helped us to better choose a wine for our taste at that moment. Food - My date and I ordered fois gras, soft shell crabs, and their mixed salad. The fois gras was excellent! It was my first time trying it and it was elegantly presented on top of a small grilled cheese type of thing (although much fancier) with a cherry on top!! The flavor was so robust and the cheese complemented the fois gras wonderfully. Soft shell crabs aren't my thing, but my date liked them! He was very excited though about the succotash...it was infused with an intense hickory flavor! It was very tasty and unexpected. My salad, as usual was very fresh. I love how the chef serves this salad - with fried cucumbers and sweet pickles on the side. It's a simple salad but has great flavors. Service - The bartender was excellent. He answered our questions, was quick with our orders and chatted with us. The chef also came out to answer some fois gras questions and was very helpful. One of the best things about this place is the combination of fancy atmosphere without feeling snobby. Everyone seems very down to earth and not too stuffy as you often find in nicer restaurants. Price - I know some people have mentioned price as an issue in their reviews, however I feel pleased that Fin has a mix of items to choose from. They do have pricey options and also affordable options. They do have some fancy, less common foods, but also some typical finds. Whats great, and makes it worth every penny (in my opinion), are two things: 1) the way in which food is prepared. I get a sense that the chef isn't afraid to experiment and I appreciate that...who else could make someone turn their head at succotash?? 2) the overall experience...there's a special magic to Fin...it's not just the food, it's the presentation, the service, the setting, and the memories. I hope others will check this place out. I'm not sure there is anything comparable in Newport News.

In a word ... wonderful. The food was fresh and the flavors were fantastic. Even if you are not a hardocre sea-foodie you will love it. I had the sorrel salad with fresh peaches and the fin firecracker shrimp.

If I had to chose one word to describe this restaurant, it would be 'Excellent.' The ambiance, the service, the food, all was excellent. The Shea crab soup, mahi with pesto/ spinach orzo and banana bread pudding were fantastic. The three other people in my party were also very pleased with their choices. Would go back without a doubt and certainly would recommend it. We were there for lunch and had the 3-course lunch for $15. Which I found to be extremely reasonable considering the quality of the food. I'm a vet picky eater and this place met and surpassed expectations. Did I also say that I love the way the place is decorated?

Fin is under new management and new chef so if you have not been there the last few months then you need to go NOW! This is not just a seafood restaurant even though they did a fantastic job with my wild salmon. The ahi tuna app was awesome as were the firecracker shrimp. My wife had an excellent duck breast for entree and a beautiful fois gras app. Overall a pretty solid wine list and Legend Brown on draft. Homemade ice cream...my fave the peanut brittle. Great job Chef Kenny...get some Prisoner! Had another great dinner at Fin. This time we celebrated my wife's birthday. New this time was the sweet corn & crab soup...really awesome. Thanks for the assortment of "bites"..you guys are really creative and we really appreciate it.

First, the positive points: Fin is located in a great location, for a peninsula restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxed and very elegant. The seating areas and bar say "upscale" and it's a great place to sit, for an impressive view. During my visit, it seemed as though the wealthy locals frequent Fin for weekday dinners. Fin would have been a strong 3, overall, except...I expect food worthy of the environment and price points. During my visit, I had traditional American fare, and a very nice red wine. The only problem is that the food was below standard for the price and I now understand that Fin is selling presentation and atmosphere, not premium cooking. In sum, I do recommend Fin for drinks with friends, but, the cuisine leaves much to be desired. I suggest crossing the bay, for similar dining with better fare.

OMG, the truffle Mac and cheese is amazing! Only $5 for the perfect sized portion at happy hour. Everything I have eaten here has been brilliant, apart from the fish and chips that I had for brunch one time. Definitely try the specials or the tapas night! Just amazing!

The service (from Matthew) was excellent, and the food was good. I didn't give this place 5 stars because they over cooked the orzo on my salmon dish. It was way mushy! Plus, the seated the 5 groups of people on the same half of the dining room which made it feel a bit crowded. The decor was cute, though. And our other food was pretty good. The prices are a bit steep. $10 for a house merlot seems a bit much. We will probably be back when we are in Newport News again.

Nice place. As with everyone else here I have to say the She Crab soup is to die for. We hit it up at lunch and had a nice quiet meal. Prices were high but they have a three course lunch menu for $25. It's a small space. Service is very good.

Came here for Sunday brunch the food was quite good, service was a bit spotty. My friend got a salad with salmon and she clearly requested that the dressing be brought on the side , it came with the dressing on it. She also clearly requested water with lemon for both of us, water showed up with no lemons. We sat outside on the patio as weather was quite nice, but it seemed like waitress viewed us as a lower priority since we were the only people outside. When we requested to sit outside the hostess picked what table to put as at because it had 2 placemats on it (which she stated), one would think moving a couple placemats would not have been to hard had we preferred to sit at a different table but we were not given that option.. I got the crab cake with cheese grits and it was awesome, I think my friend liked her salmon too. Presentation was pretty good and the place has a very nice ambience. Our waitress was friendly and professional and she seemed sincere, perhaps she was just busy or forgetful that day, I don't know. I will definitely come back here because I like the food and the location, just wish service was not as slow and that there were less errors..

I made reservations for dinner here with my girlfriend via opentable.com . Everything went smoothly and we were seated promptly. There were only a few other people in the restaurant when we arrived (there was a playoff football game that night, so I imagine folks were busy at home) so the atmosphere was a bit too quiet for my taste, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. The food was enjoyable and very well presented, we shared an appetizer, but skipped on dessert. Unfortunately I found the dishes to be a bit overpriced. We ordered two dishes that were around $28-30 each, but I really feel that they would be more appropriately priced at around $20-22 each after having eaten them. On the whole our experience at Fin was enjoyable, but in the end I had a hard time swallowing the prices for food I felt should not have been so expensive. That being said, I may still return in the future to try different dishes, as this was my first time going there.

Had dinner here on 5/18 with a party of nine. Excellent service. Food was exquisite. I had the rack of lamb--cooked to perfection. We also had scallops, salmon, flounder with crab. Smoked fish dip was amazing. Corn-crab soup with truffle oil was stunningly good. The medley of flavors is just to die for. Will def be back!

Went to a birthday dinner there. Atmosphere was very nice. Had a group of about 18 and the restaurant knew ahead of time. They took more then 30min to bring the bread out, they took so long I thought maybe they didn't serve it. Well they brought the bread out with our appetizers. I had the Tuna tartare and it was good, I've never had it before. My main dish was the Mahi Mahi which was good as well. My only issue was 2 other people I was with had an issue. First person didn't like seafood so she asked that her lobster mash potatoes be substituted for regular mash potatoes. The waiter told her no they can't. The other persons issue was her filet steak was more rare then the medium rare she ordered. She asked if they could put it on the grill again and the waiter said no because it would take too long. This place is pretty pricey and for them to not even accommodate their customers is crazy. My food was good but I would not return due to how they handled those two situations and the price of the food. I'm not opposed to good pricey food but I feel it wasn't worth it.

We went for a late lunch and had a top notch experience with excellent seafood outside on a fantastic late summer day. Service was good and the 3-course lunch special was an outstanding value. She crab soup was the best that I've ever had and the scallops are to die for. However, I suggest you skip the bread pudding.

Thanks to all the positive Yelp reviews, I gave fin a try on a recent trip to Williamsburg. Phenomenal food, nice beer list!! Being from Miami where we get our share of fresh seafood, I was extremely impressed! Ridiculous job on the tomato caprese (appetizer)and the soft shell crab / crabcake combo (main). The chef and kirchen staff deserve high gives all around. Wait staff was very familiar with menu and specials. I will definitely be back on my next visit to NN, maybe even tonight!!

This was one of the participating restaurants in Newport News' first annual restaurant week so a friend and I decided to try it out. I agree with most of the other reviewers that the ambiance is a smooth blend of the classic and modern. The firecracker shrimp was delicious, not so much the spider roll (a bit bland, little flavor). Appetizers were a bit slow in coming out, but the server was gracious. Be sure to try the doughnut holes with coffee whipped cream!

Fin was awesome! This review is a few months late but working at night makes it hard to catch up! My wife and I went there on a Sunday for Valentine's day and the service was excellent. The scallops and fried oysters were divine. Also, on that day all wines were half-off so we splurged and got their veuve clicquot (usually pretty pricy champagne). I would definitely go back.

Wonderful dining experience, with emphasis on "experience"! Especially if you get the tasting menu with the wine pairing. Only didn't give it 5 stars because it was pricey... But it was as close to "worth it" as you can get with 4+ stars!

My wife and I visited Fin on a Sunday night(7/29/12). It was our first visit. The restaurant is located in a nice section consisting of quaint businesses and condo living off Jefferson Avenue that I did not know existed. We were very impressed with the decor and the friendliness of the staff as soon as we walked into the door and things only got better. We started off with an appetizer of lump crabmeat/toasted Crostini. Good choice as it was delicious and a very generous portion. But, the best was yet to come. I had the crabcakes and my wife had a crabcake/soft shell combo. Both dishes were served over a succotash containing edemame that was unbelievably tasty. The highlight of the evening was the LUMP CRABCAKES. I have had many, many crabcakes over the years in many restaurants in different states but these were the best I have ever eaten. My wife felt the same way. Flavorful with huge lumps of crabmeat and no filler. How they were held together to prepare was puzzling with so much lump crab. I was a little disappointed that Chef Sloane was out of town on this night but the young lady who is his sous chef prepares a meal that is to die for. He has no worries leaving the kitchen to this young lady. I had to pass on my compliments before leaving for a delicious meal and she graciously gave credit to Chef Sloane for her talents. Chef would have a hard time preparing a better meal than the one I ate on this night. If you want a scrumptious meal in a nice atmosphere with good service from a pleasant staff, Fin will more than meet your expectations. My wife and I cannot wait to return to sample Chef Sloane's talents but his Sous Chef has set a high bar already. Jim U.

The food was decent, though the appetizers were too salty to my taste. The service was friendly. However, they didn't honor Yelp coupon and added 20% service automatically to the bill. It ended up pretty pricey for a lunch.
